The Beach House

Hey - here’s the last of my photos from Montauk and from The Ivy party at Sole East - can’t wait for the next one! Thanks to Christina, Jared, and Jasmine…and also to the super friendly and helpful hotel staff at Sole East…sorry about that 5pm checkout! xo eddie

The Ivy League

Hi - I’m back from Montauk with photos and sunburned feet in the pattern of my Havaianas flip-flops…this looks totally rad, believe it. I was out there for the first of the parties that The Ivy are throwing at Sole East this season…but also I was there just because it’s summer…and that’s what you do in the summer if you live in NYC. The party was super cute…and though there have been a few noises about “oh no, now hipsters are going to take over Montauk”…well, it didn’t feel that way at all to me. This party - and Montauk in the summer in general - is all about low-key artistic cool. Since the days of the Rolling Stones hanging out at Andy Warhol’s ramshackle Montauk compound, this has always been the East End hangout for surfers, photographers, edgy models, artists, and young designers…the vibe out there is decidedly more Diane Arbus than Diane von Furstenberg. More photos from the party and from Montauk tomorrow…xx eddie

It Never Rains In Southern California

Hey there - it’s Eddie here. I stopped by LAX briefly yesterday and took a little 15 hour flight - more about that soon. I really love southern California though. Los Angeles and the surrounding area are like a case study for the ways in which environment affects mood. It really is like an endless summer out there and you find yourself wanting to do everything outdoors. Due largely to the constant sunshine, L.A. fashion has a reputation for being super casual…and it is…to a point. In my experience though, many Angelenos have an almost hardcore approach to casual style. It’s not, “Oh well, it’s warm today so I’ll just throw on this old t-shirt and some flip-flops”…it’s more like, “These might just be denim shorts but they’re the most amazing Egyptian cotton, Japanese vintage-loomed, hand-distressed denim shorts anyone has ever seen.” Show me a table of great vintage cowboy boots at the Rose Bowl flea market and I’ll show you some Angelenos with the same lustful look in their eyes as a Parisian fashion editor would have when she’s eyeing a $5,000 Ric Owens jacket. They’re really serious about being really casual. All of which is a roundabout way of saying…before we move on to something else, here’s a load of photos I shot at the Coachella festival…check out all the cute spring and summer looks…seriously! xx

Kimi’s Desert Dance

Hey Kimi - I love that you took a fuschia dress/nightie from Victoria’s Secret and rocked it up early 90’s rave style with a big sideways floral baseball cap and tie-dyed wife beater underneath and then went and danced at the Anthem party. I might put some photos of you on my blog if that’s okay with you? Let me know. xo eddie

Meanwhile, back at the ranch…

Hey - how’s it going? If you’ve ever been to the Coachella festival you know that you would have to be crazy or drunk - or both - to consider camping out in the desert heat. The venue itself - The Empire Polo Club - is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Most people get hotel rooms in nearby towns…and then hit a party or two before heading to the festival in the late afternoon and evening. Coachella weekend actually seems more like Winter Music Conference or Art Basel Miami Beach (where the off-site stuff is talked about just as much as the “official” stuff), rather than a typical music festival. There were great parties sponsored by Levis, T-Mobile, Jeremy Scott/Adidas and several others - with most of the crowd being made up of people from L.A. and New York. If you ask me, the kids from Anthem magazine always throw the best Coachella party. This year was all about the Anthem Ranch - a massive ranch house in Indio with a lake and swimming pool, free BBQ, DJ sets from Aeroplane and Cage & Aviary, a super cute crowd…and groves of lemon trees. Rather than describing how much fun this was, I’ll just say that it was the only time I’ve ever seen the fire department called…to an outdoor party. xx eddie

Palm Pilots

So as some of you already know…umm, I was at the Coachella festival this weekend…in the desert near Indio, California. Wow. I mean WOW. This was my third time at Coachella and I think it was the best ever - the cutest crowd and the best music of any festival in the world, hands down. It’s been a long winter for some of you…I’m not sure you’re really ready for all of these photos…I’m going to drive to L.A. now and think about it…x eddie

Scenes From A Maul

Hey - there was this really cool pair of shoes that I started to buy when I was at Topshop in London recently but I changed my mind at the last minute. Then the next day I was heading to the airport and was like “doh!” I should have bought those shoes. Well, it was too late. I don’t really like to buy clothes or shoes online. I need to try them on and see what they look like. It’s something to look forward to the next time I make that transatlantic journey though. Yes sir, I’ll jump on the ‘ol double decker bus and head down to Oxford Street, take the escalator straight up to the…wait, what do you mean Topshop is now open in New York??!

Party Like It’s 1999

Stylesightings last night at Nylon magazine’s 10th anniversary party in New York. In 1999 I had recently moved to New York and gotten a job as an intern for the Beastie Boys. One of my main duties was going through magazines to look for any Beasties press. I heard about this cool new magazine that Helena Christensen was doing with some friends - it was supposedly going to focus on New York and London. (NY…LON…get it?) Well, they sort of dropped the New York/London theme after a few issues…but they are still on the top of my magazine heap when I’m looking for fashionable info about those two cities. Or when I want to read about up-and-coming designers, or Danish pop bands, or where to shop in Barcelona. Nylon is a fashion magazine sure…but it’s also always been a lifestyle guide for the cool kids. Only 10 years old and already staying out late and partying…xx eddie

Lagerfeld Confidential

Paris Fashion Week has reached its conclusion - and with it, women’s ready-to-wear fashion month. After running through as many shows and streets and parties as humanly possible in New York, London, Milan, and Paris, I feel like I now need to head to a spa for a month. Which brings to mind something Karl Lagerfeld said the other night at the Fendi party in Paris. This was the last major party of PFW and Gossip had just played live for a smallish crowd that included Lagerfeld, Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, Rachel Zoe, Mark Ronson, and Jamie Hince. It was after 1am when the band finished and Lagerfeld was still hanging out and chatting. I had the chance to tell him that I admired his wide-ranging curiosity - the obviously genuine interest that he holds not only for fashion but for edgy music, photography, books, furniture design, etc. (This was my attempt at finding a sophisticated way of saying, “Wow, you’re over 70 and into the Gossip - that rules!”) He explained to me that curiosity is not something you try to have - you don’t suddenly wake up one day and say, “I’m going to investigate culture today and go to a gallery and read a book and then this afternoon I’m going to discover some new bands.” He was saying that a curious nature - a desire to know everything about everything - is just part of who you are. If this is your nature, then no effort is required - curiosity and discovery will be as natural to you as breathing. I’m going to try to keep Karl’s naturally energetic and curious demeanor in mind in the coming weeks and months…his demeanor and personality are actually just as impressive as his huge talent as a designer and artist…but right now, I think I just need a nap. xx eddie
