Hi there - it’s Eddie - thanks for reading Stylesightings! You guys know Amber and Nisha, right? The Broken Hearts? I’m sure you must have seen them in that big London issue of Nylon that was out a few months back - they had a 2 page spread with photos and an article. They’re visiting New York this week and DJing at places like The Box and doing fun summer stuff like checking out Coney Island. I’ve been hanging out with them and listening to them spin records and admiring their outfits. They are at the forefront of a 20’s-meets-40’s fashion and music revival that is going on right now among certain kids in London and New York - but don’t go adding Swingers to your Netflix queue just yet. These girls are much more likely to get the crowd doing the Charleston (20’s) than the Lindy Hop (40’s), and they have a record out that was produced by the edgy electronic-and-rock producer Nathan Whitey. In short, this is not your brother’s 90’s swing craze reheated. Oh, and I heard from a friend that there was a photo of the girls in the Topshop design studio when they were designing the current retro-inspired collection known as “Bandstand“. Which is funny because as soon as I saw some of these Topshop pieces I thought, “woah, Amber and Nisha!” Check out their Myspace here.
Hey - the Ting Tings are over from Manchester to play a sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom tonight. They are my favorite band in the world at the moment and I’m super excited to see them in a small venue before they head out to play massive summer festivals like Glastonbury and Lollapalooza. I looove their music and Katie’s style is sick - her look is like a younger Kylie as styled by Topshop and Urban Outfitters for a Nylon magazine shoot. I love pop music and pop fashion and they are like a perfect storm of pop - but with the cool edge that the British do so well. x eddie
If you haven’t started sweating L.A.’s new pop sensation Rory yet, then you should probably do that really soon before people start to look at you funny and stuff. She’s my favorite new pop singer of the year and her debut single “Catch Me If You Can” is all over the Valley’s Top 40 station, Power 106. You can start your obsession by clicking here…x eddie
This spring and summer you’ll be hearing “Lights & Music” by Cut/Copy and “Blind” by Hercules and Love Affair everywhere - from a rooftop party in Brooklyn, to a basement on the Lower East Side, from a pool party during Coachella, to a terrace in Ibiza. If you’re going to Miami Winter Music Conference later this month, forget about it - get ready to hear these tracks at every cool party. They are both hands-in-the-air warm weather anthems (although “Blind” has a nice moody undercurrent), and you should get to know them now so you can beat the rush to the dance floor at that first outdoor party. x Eddie
I love pop music - but what I really love are music groups/artists that have the total package going on. For me, “total package” usually means having an attractive and cool female singer, great fashion sense, and really cool packaging and graphics and images for your products. (A product can be anything from a music video, to CD cover art, to a band T-shirt, to a magazine article about your group.) Sorry, but four dudes standing on stage with guitars, T-shirts, and jeans usually doesn’t do it for me. The leaders in total package presentation would be artists like Kylie, Madonna, and Daft Punk - plus loads of indie groups/artists like CSS, Yelle, New Young Pony Club, Santogold, The Kills…the list goes on. Oh, and to have the total package you should probably also have some amazing tunes - but that’s not necessarily first on my list. Speaking of groups with attractive/cool female singers who have the total package - check out Heartsrevolution. Heartsrevolution is the cute couple Lo and Ben from the Heartschallenger ice cream truck - which you and your squad have probably come across if you’re going to the right sort of parties in L.A. or New York. So far they’ve only released 2 limited-edition vinyl singles - both of which are sold-out, both featuring a B-side track called “Prism Effect” featuring Cory Kennedy(!) on vocals. None of these tracks are available in the iTunes store and they are hard to find even on illegal download sites - their scarcity likely being down to the fact that ripping vinyl into the computer is sort of a drag. The Heartsrevolution kids are releasing one of their tracks - “C.Y.O.A.!” - with wider distribution on March 11th. It’s still going to be vinyl only (with cool packaging/artwork I’m sure) but at least now you should be able to buy a copy before it sells out. Even better - today their label slid me a link to a free legit download of a “C.Y.O.A.!” remix that’s taken from the upcoming release. This mix is pretty close to the album version but I think it’s even better. If you want to download it yourself, you should click here…xoxo Eddie
