Hey - yesterday’s Wall Street Journal column on how to pronounce fashion names gave me such a laugh that I had to pass it on to you guys. Anyone who has ever accidentally bumped into Hedi Slimane (Edi Sli-mahn) and torn their Ann Demeulemeester (Ahn Duh-moo-lah-MEE-ster) jacket while racing to catch the Thakoon (Ta-koon) show will surely be able to relate. The best bit - look for the sidebar where you can play audio clips of WSJ fashion reporter Christina Passariello pronouncing the names correctly. It’s like a Berlitz course taught by Derek Zoolander! For kicks, try it the way I did - hover your cursor over the “play audio” button…pronounce the designer/label name the way you think is correct…then play the clip. One key to correct pronunciation is not being afraid to use the correct lilt - some fashion names require a certain Euro affectation that can feel seriously pretentious. The upside - certain fashion names, when pronounced correctly, are really fun to say. I dare you not to smile while saying Bulgari (BOOL-ga-ree) or Ungaro (OON-ga-ro)…xo Eddie
