You’re My Obsession: Bemidji Lumberjack

So today I was looking at some of the great streetstyle photos from around the world that can be found on Stylesight - and I was chatting with the girls in the Fashion Office here about how much I love all the lumberjack shirts I’m seeing this fall. I love how guys who don’t really look rugged at all are wearing them and pairing them with skinny jeans and vintage army parkas and trainers. While it’s fine to wear something in a sensible fashion - a lumberjack shirt worn by an actual lumberjack, or a Victorian bustle skirt worn by someone who actually lived in Victorian-era England, for example - I love the effect that’s achieved by grabbing a perfectly sensible item and pulling it from its sensible context. What fun is there in being sensible after all?! (Okay, so bustle skirts have never actually been sensible - but at least they made sense in Victorian-era England, unlike say modern-day Harajuku.)

The streetstyle photos I grabbed from Stylesight below show guys on the street in Manhattan and Berlin. Does anyone who lives in Manhattan or Berlin actually NEED a lumberjack shirt? Not really…but they look cool…and I want one. However - and this is crucial - I want a truly authentic one. I was looking around the interwebs and the most authentic one I found - by far - is the Bunyan Jac Shirt by Bemidji Woolen Mills from Bemidji, Minnesota which you can purchase here. This company has been around since 1920, and Bemidji is the supposed home of (the mythical) Paul Bunyan - to my mind, it doesn’t get much more authentic than that. I was surprised to learn that neither L.L. Bean nor Pendleton currently make a shirt which I would consider an authentic lumberjack. Now the only question is - royal blue/black, white/black, or the trad red/black?
