A Real Dahl Face

“When I was 17, I saw a magazine…it had those English girls who had blonde hair.” Sorry, this is my bad mangling (and rewording) of “English Boys” by my favorite band of all-time – Blondie. Speaking of Blondie and magazines and English people, can I just say how much I love Regan Cameron’s photos of Sophie Dahl in the November British Vogue? I’m posting a few of the photos here and you can see her uncanny resemblance to the (previously) inimitable Debbie Harry. Dahl’s gorgeous blonde hair and porcelain china-doll complexion, Charlotte Tilbury’s make-up, and the styling and fashion direction of Bay Garnett all combine to (re)create perfection. The styling here is particularly effective in recreating the Blondie look – lots of berets, skinny white jeans, animal prints, fuzzy oversize sweaters, shiny black leather, and splashes of retro color. It’s a higher-end take on Debbie to be sure – in reality, her pencil skirts were more likely from the Salvation Army rather than from the likes of Alexander McQueen.
I wonder if Kirsten Dunst and the producers of the upcoming Michel Gondry-directed Blondie bio-pic feel like Vogue has stolen their thunder? The movie is reportedly set to start filming early next year, with Dunst having been hand-picked by Harry for the starring role. I personally think that Dunst is a bit too goofy and sweet to properly capture the punk/downtown edge that Debbie has always had. With a strong assist from the hair, make-up, and wardrobe departments, let’s hope they can channel the essence of Blondie half as well as Dahl and co. have here.
