soar above the clouds with seagull
March 1st, 2007
As someone obsessed with keeping their best features looking gorgeous, going to a hair stylist for the first time is a horribly nerve-racking experience for me. It could be the start of a fruitful and long-lasting relationship, akin to the first date with my future spouse. Or it could be a disaster on par with the sinking of the Titanic, leaving me physically and emotionally scarred (Oh, Britney!) The current knot in my stomach may have something to do with the obscene amount of coffee I consume daily, but it’s more than likely due to the fact that tonight I am entrusting my tresses to a new person: Luke Kalat at Seagull. Founded in 1971 as New York’s (and perhaps the nation’s) first unisex salon, Seagull is now co-owned by Seattle hair superstar Sean Cottle and the lovely Ms. Johanna Fateman, better known as one-third of the highly influential feminist electronic punk band Le Tigre.
Fateman and Cottle completely re-hauled the space last August, leaving only the salon’s original slogan “for Women…for Men” on the shop window. Pink walls, vintage styling chairs and the co-owner’s collections of art and “loved objects” lend their charms. It’s obviously rock n’ roll, but can they cut hair? Judging from reader reviews on CitySearch.com, the answer is a resounding yes. Having been featured in diverse publications such as Bust Magazine, The New York Times and SPIN magazine, Seagull is not just for indie kids seeking to meet one of their musical heroes; its for anyone looking for a totally customized cut and color in a fantastic environment. People fly from L.A to New York to go to this place; the kind of folks who can afford such a luxury tend not to be starving creative types. It must be good. Seagull is located at 240 West 10th Street between Bleecker and Hudson 212-989-1807. Open Wednesday-Sunday, 2pm-10pm. Cuts $75-$100, Color $90 and up. Photo Credit: Jim Cheifari, Lisa Darms
